✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

For a first trip to the Algarve, Lagos is the most complete base: dramatic beaches, a walkable old town and a train station. Albufeira suits travelers who want nightlife and a big choice of hotels. Vilamoura is the pick for golf, a marina and resort hotels, while Tavira and Carvoeiro are quieter and work well for couples. Families do best in Quarteira, Vilamoura or Carvoeiro, and surfers head west to Sagres.

This guide compares nine towns by travel style, with travel times from Faro Airport, the towns you can reach without a car and hotel picks in each one.

The Best Areas to Stay in the Algarve at a Glance

The Algarve coast runs from the Spanish border to Cape St. Vincent, and each town along it has a different character. Use this table to narrow down your base, then read the town profiles below.

West, Central or East Algarve?

The region splits into three parts, and choosing one first makes the town decision easier.

The western Algarve, from Sagres to Albufeira, has the golden cliffs, sea caves and rock formations that appear in most Algarve photos. Lagos, Portimão and Carvoeiro are here. It is also the busiest stretch in summer.

The central Algarve covers Vilamoura, Quarteira and Faro. Beaches are long and sandy, the golf courses are concentrated here, and Faro Airport is close.

The eastern Algarve, toward the Spanish border, is flatter and calmer. Tavira and the island beaches of the Ria Formosa lagoon are the main draw.

Distance from Faro Airport matters if you arrive on a long-haul flight. Approximate transfer times by car:

Town Distance from Faro Airport Transfer time
Vilamoura 24 km About 30 min
Tavira 40 km About 35 min
Albufeira 46 km About 40 min
Carvoeiro 65 km About 60 min
Alvor (near Portimão) 76 km About 60 min
Lagos 86 km 60 to 85 min
Sagres 120 km About 100 min

1. Lagos: Best Base for a First Visit

Lagos combines what most travelers want from the Algarve in one place. The old town has cobbled streets, seafood restaurants and a lively evening scene, and within a short drive or boat trip you reach Ponta da Piedade and beaches such as Praia do Camilo and Praia da Dona Ana. Meia Praia, a long sandy beach east of town, is the easy option for families and water sports.

Lagos is also the western end of the Algarve railway, so you can arrive from Lisbon by train and explore the town on foot.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, couples, travelers without a car, boat trips and kayaking.
  • Keep in mind: it is 60 to 85 minutes from Faro Airport, and the old town gets crowded in July and August.

2. Albufeira: Best for Nightlife and Beach Variety

Albufeira is the largest resort town in the Algarve and the one with the widest range of hotels, from apartments to five-star beachfront properties. The old town sits above Praia dos Pescadores, and to the east you find Praia da Oura and the long red cliffs of Praia da Falésia. The bar and club area known as the Strip is where most of the nightlife happens.

Albufeira Marina, Albufeira, Portugal
  • Best for: groups of friends, nightlife, travelers who want plenty of beaches and restaurants close by.
  • Keep in mind: the train station, Albufeira-Ferreiras, is outside the town, and some areas are loud late at night in summer. Families and couples looking for quiet usually prefer the beaches east of the center, around Praia da Falésia.

3. Vilamoura: Best for Golf, Marina Life and Resorts

Vilamoura is a planned resort built around a large marina, with several golf courses within a few minutes of the hotels. The atmosphere is polished and international, with marina restaurants, sandy beaches and a casino. It is about 30 minutes from Faro Airport, which helps on short trips.

Praia da Falésia, Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal
  • Best for: golfers, luxury resort stays, families who want everything close to the hotel.
  • Keep in mind: there is no historic old town, and you will want a car or taxis to reach the rest of the region.

4. Tavira: Best for Quiet, Historic Charm

Tavira is the main historic town of the eastern Algarve, with whitewashed houses, a riverfront, a castle and an old bridge across the Gilão River. The beaches are on Ilha de Tavira, a sandbar island in the Ria Formosa reached by a short ferry. The pace is slower than in the west, which suits couples and travelers who prefer local restaurants to resort strips.

Gilão River, Tavira, Portugal
  • Best for: couples, culture lovers, travelers without a car, longer and slower stays.
  • Keep in mind: there are no cliff beaches nearby, and the famous rock formations of the west are more than an hour away.

5. Carvoeiro: Best for Clifftop Views and Couples

Carvoeiro is a small fishing village built around a beach framed by cliffs. A boardwalk leads to the Algar Seco rock formations, and Praia da Marinha and the Benagil caves are a short drive east. Evenings are relaxed, which makes Carvoeiro popular with couples and families with young children.

Carvoeiro, Lagoa, Portugal
  • Best for: couples, families, coastal walks, visiting Benagil and Praia da Marinha.
  • Keep in mind: the village is hilly, there is no train station, and a car makes day trips much easier.

6. Portimão: Best for a Big Beach and City Services

Portimão is a working city on the Arade River, and its beach district, Praia da Rocha, has a wide sandy beach backed by hotels and a long promenade. The city side has shops, a marina and fish restaurants. Alvor, a smaller village with a boardwalk across the dunes, is a few minutes west.

Praia de Alvor, Portimão, Portugal
  • Best for: travelers who want a large beach with hotels on the seafront, families, value for money.
  • Keep in mind: Praia da Rocha is built up with high-rise hotels, and it has less character than Lagos or Tavira.

7. Faro: Best for Short Trips and Late Arrivals

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and the closest town to the airport. The walled old town, the cathedral and the Arco da Vila gate are worth a day, and boats leave from the marina for the islands of the Ria Formosa. Faro is also the main rail and bus hub, so it is practical for travelers without a car.

The Baroque façade and twin bell towers of Igreja do Carmo overlook the patterned Portuguese pavement of Largo do Carmo in Faro.

  • Best for: short stays, first and last nights of a trip, travelers using public transport.
  • Keep in mind: the city beach is on an island outside town, so Faro works better as a stopover than as a beach base.

8. Quarteira: Best for Relaxed Family Beach Holidays

Quarteira sits next to Vilamoura and has a long sandy beach with a seafront promenade and a traditional fish market. It is less polished than its neighbor and usually cheaper, and families like the calm water and the easy walk along the promenade into Vilamoura.

Rows of straw beach parasols stand across the sandy shoreline of Praia de Quarteira in the Algarve, with the Atlantic Ocean and a clear blue sky in the background.
Praia de Quarteira, Quarteira, Algarve, Portugal
  • Best for: families, longer stays on a budget, travelers who want to be close to Vilamoura without resort prices.
  • Keep in mind: the town itself has little historic interest, and the beachfront is lined with apartment blocks.

9. Sagres: Best for Surfers and Nature Lovers

Sagres is at the southwestern tip of Europe, close to Cape St. Vincent and its lighthouse. Beaches face both the south coast and the Atlantic, so there is usually a spot with surfable waves. The town is small and laid-back, with surf schools, cliff walks and sunset views from the cape.

View across the clear turquoise waters of Praia da Mareta in Sagres, with sandy coves and pale limestone cliffs surrounding the sheltered Atlantic bay.
Praia da Mareta, Sagres, Portugal
  • Best for: surfers, hikers, travelers who want empty landscapes over resort facilities.
  • Keep in mind: it is the farthest town from Faro Airport, the wind can be strong, and a car is close to essential.

Where to Stay in the Algarve Without a Car

The Algarve railway runs along the coast from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, with stations in Lagos, Portimão, Silves, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé, Faro, Olhão and Tavira. Since July 2026, electric regional trains run the whole line without a change in Faro.

The towns that work best without a car are Lagos, Faro and Tavira, where the station is close to the center and the beaches are reachable on foot, by ferry or by local bus. Portimão also has a station, although it is north of the city center and Praia da Rocha. Vilamoura, Carvoeiro and Sagres are not on the railway, and in Albufeira the station is outside town.

Best Areas in the Algarve for Couples

Tavira and Carvoeiro are the strongest choices for couples who want quiet evenings and good restaurants. Lagos suits couples who also want nightlife and boat trips. For a resort stay with a spa, Vilamoura and the cliffs around Carvoeiro have the widest choice.

If you prefer a hotel without children, look for adults-friendly properties such as Palmares Beach House Hotel in Lagos and AP Maria Nova Lounge in Tavira.

Best Areas in the Algarve for Families

Quarteira, Vilamoura and Carvoeiro have calm beaches, promenades and resorts with pools and kids' clubs. Praia da Rocha in Portimão and Meia Praia in Lagos are wide sandy beaches with space to spread out.

Family-focused hotels include Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort, Anantara Vilamoura and Pestana Palm Gardens near Carvoeiro. The Aquashow Park Hotel in Quarteira is next to the Aquashow water park.
